#47 - Use the Mario Effect for Your Life
What I’m Watching
The Full Truth About Mark Rober video. He’s a former Nasa and Apple engineer turned full-time YouTuber. A lot of great insights from one of the biggest YouTube creators today.
Resource of the week
A lot of you are very kind and give my POV handwriting TikTok videos a lot of love. Here is the paper I use for them, the Rhodia dot pad, reasonably priced and fountain pen friendly.

Thoughts
It’s funny that I’m nearing almost 300 videos made on TikTok and I still feel like I have no idea what I’m doing at all. I’ll tell you what I mean. My friend Alex said my content has no consistency. Case in point this week I made a video that got 900 views and another that got 80k views. It's a big challenge for me.
It was quite timely that I came across Mark Rober’s interview. The videos on his channel consistently bring in over 10 million views. He talks about what he calls the ‘Mario Effect’ on his approach to content creation.
He explains that if we play the game Mario for the first time and die, nobody ever complains they’re bad at the game or an embarrassment or a failure, they’ll figure out how to adjust for next time and feel stoked to try again. He suggests taking this mindset to content creation. How if he makes a video that underperforms he sees it as an opportunity to get better, to keep giving it more goes.
I think this goes beyond content creation. So many people fall into the trap of analysis paralysis partly because taking action is scary and a lot of people tie their pride and self-worth to outcomes. In these situations, it might be worth gamifying life as Mark suggests, to have fun, focus on success, and treat failures as opportunities to course correct.
In other news, I’ve now officially started the hunt for the next property. It’ll be the first acquisition since the mini-budget last year and the mortgage fiasco. So it’ll be interesting to see how it has affected yields and the market. I’ll keep you all up to date!

If you’re looking to invest but feeling unsure about the property market, I made a video this week about index funds.
